D. Loren Fields is a graduate of Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine, where he is presently Director of Bands for grades 7-12. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from the University of Maine at Orono. Loren has performed with the Bangor and Portland Symphonies, as well as numerous local musical theater productions. He has played french horn in the Colby Symphonic Band and Colby Orchestra, the Augusta Wind ensemble, the Bowdoin Wind Ensemble and the Manchester Brass Quintet. He has performed on stage with Barry Manilow and Colin Raye. Loren has studied with Philip Nesbit, Louis Stout, Robert Abernathy, and Charles Kavalovski. In addition he has been coached by Jens Lindemann., Fred Mills, and David Ohanian, all former members of the Canadian Brass.
Loren is a founding member of the Downeast Brass, the quintet he is currently a member of. Customized musical arrangements by Dwight Tibbetts that showcase Loren's range and stamina are available for purchase from the Downeast Brass web site: www.downeastbrass.com.
Loren is also a member of MENC, the Maine Music Educators Association, and has served on the executive board of the Maine Band Directors Association.
He is active in the D.A.R.E. program as an educational consultant with the Kennebec County Sheriff's Department, performing in the "D.A.R.E. x 2" Band. Loren is the recipient of the Maine D.A.R.E. Teacher of the Year Award 2005. He also held the rank of captain (Infantry) in the Maine Army National Guard, and is an active scanner enthusiast and amateur radio operator, holding the call-sign of N1UMF. Loren currently holds the rank of Captain in the Civil Air Patrol (C.A.P.) and is involved in Homeland Security issues. He is also involved with the Kennebec County EMA as a Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) member.
Loren is an ardent supporter of the U.S. Constitution (esp. the Second Amendment),concealed carry and individual liberties and freedoms.
Loren uses two different Conn 8D French horns, one an 8DY yellow bell and a '70s vintage 8D. Loren finds that both instruments respond well to Paxman 4C cup mouthpiece with an Halstead-Chidell narrow rim. |
